Hey, I'm the first person I know to own a Hasty Bake, too. Not a bad club to be part of. I converted from gas to charcoal years ago because of my lovely wife. Some advantage there for me. But I've only owned my gourmet about two weeks.

Some of the greatest grilling advice around is at http://www.amazing ribs.com/. Check out what Eathead has to say! Learn the zen of charcoal and how to manage two zones on your grill.

Welcome to the family Glenn. :D Hang in there. You'll find a ton of resources and tips all across the internet, but nothing will be more valuable than your own trials and experiments. One thing you'll find immensely helpful is to keep a journal of your grilling and smoking adventures. Make notes of literally everything you can think of including weather conditions. ;) Practice makes perfect. By this time next year, all of your friends will be calling on you to share grilling tips and advice.

Absolutely keep a log, it will help you immensely over time. Also, spend time getting to know the Gourmet. It's very different from typical grills you may have used in the past. And the best thing about the "practice makes perfect" advice is that you get to eat lots of delicious BBQ along the way.

Also, Glenn, bad typos last night (was typing on my iPad and half asleep, sorry).

For some really great grill advice and recipes go to http://www.amazingribs.com/. Read all about 2 zone cooking and the Zen of Charcoal. Meathead knows what he's doing. Also, consider buying one or more of the Weber cookbooks, they are very good.

Thanks for the advice and warm welcome Eric and rkerlin! I knew people on this site would have great advice so that's why I decided to post, (usually read and keep my fingers off the keyboard). Craig "Meatehead" Goldwynn got my interest peaked on the HBG when I started reading the Amazing Ribs website a few weeks ago. Reread the Zen of Charcoal and have read 2 zone before, love that site also, great information. Also have one of the Weber recipe books but I'll keep my eye out for charcoal grilling books. I've set up a log book and plan on using that also for each cook from here on out. The Gourmet is different from any grill I've had in the past and I hope it pushes my Genesis further out of the way and becomes my main cooker. I'm very excited about the practice part of this.:D Thanks again and I'll definitely be reading more. Glenn

California Grilling

Postby ecowper » Thu May 12, 2011 9:32 pm

Glenn, the best part about the Gourmet is the ability to cook California style really well. I've already done a tri-tip Santa Maria style. It's probably the best one we've ever done. And grilling steak is a whole new experience. Plus you can do asparagus and much more very well.

My son and I just grilled rock cod filets tonight. Delicious!

I have been cooking on a Gourmet for over 11 years and there is just is no competitor. The heat deflector is just the greatest and I did not try until a few years ago. Just use it with chicken and/or rack of lamb and you will agree. Perfect! Now I am able to get HB Charcoal shipped in that makes for way the HB was designed for. We live in LA and just let us know when you are in town and you are invited to a HB dinner at our home. Gourmet HB, great view and plenty of things to drink.

Thank you Hasty Bake,

Don

My Name is Chris Ricks from Columbia, MO. I began barbequing about 2 years ago with a Weber WSM. I had a friend with a Hasty Bake Legacy and fell in love with the versatility it provided for both grilling and smoking. The problem was I had just been introduced to Hasty right after purchasing my Weber so I had to wait a couple of years to buy one to justify the cost to my wife. I purchased the Legacy 131 and when the first pork butt came off Hasty, my wife asked me why I waited so long to get it. I have found a real passion for backyard BBQ'g and now look forward to the weekends so I can try new recipes. I look forward to trying new ideas that I find here on the site. Glad to be an official Hasty Bake owner!!
