handle on fire door

Postby jack in hutch » Tue Mar 27, 2012 12:24 pm

I recently purchased a hasty bake and discovered what I consider to be a real problem. When there is burning charcoal in the firebox the metal handle
on the fire box door gets extremely hot. If the firebox door is opened there is a risk of severely burning one's fingers. I have an old "boomer" which
has a bakelite handle which does not get hot.

Another issue: I recently bought a portable hasty bake which is electric! It is labelled Hot Rod Model 366E. There is a large heating element in the
lid. I have owned hasty bakes since the 1950's and have never heard of an electric unit. I wonder if anyone can offer information concerning when
this unit might have been made. By the way, this hasty bake has never been used, it is essentially "brand new"

Hey Jack,
Welcome to the forum. :D I've never heard of the electric HB model. I'd love to see what you've got there. Who knows, it may be a collectors item worth lots of money :?: Please post some photos of it so some of us can identify it, okay?
Bringing back the Bakelite handles would be a great idea. I have an old Suburban with the Bakelite handle, and another Legacy model with the chrome handle. For my experience, the only time I go near the firebox door is when I'm planning to add charcoal or adjust the firebox; so naturally I'm wearing gloves for that. Still, I'd love to see Hasty-Bake bring back those Bakelite handles :)

Hey Jack,
You are right. :D It is a discontinued Hasty-Bake model. The electric model that you have is also larger than the current portable. Yours has a grill area of about 18"x23", while the current portable is about 11"x16". I don't know when they made those electric models, but if you have any further questions, give 'ol Hasty-Bake a call at 918-665-8220. Here are the photos that you sent...

I believe what you have is a Condo model. Grant developed these for the apartment dwellers who typically can't have a live fire on their patios. I believe these were produced in the late 70's/early 80's. They have one at the showroom that's in Chad's office, but it's stainless. It seems like all the pics I've seen in their literature are stainless, so you could possibly have a prototype.
Fiesta King - The Beast
Gourmet - current s.s.
Juniors - 50's; Kenmore era; red 3-D tag
Portables - early 70's Avocado; late 70's Black/Silver; current s.s.
Ranger - 60's Black/Silver, yellow 3-D tag
Suburban - #406
Sportsman & Camper - both ca. 1950
